Each year, Volusia County sends 2 coaches and 6 contestants from Area High School Academic Teams to the State Academic Team Tournament. Volusia County's High School Academic Team Coaches nominate potential contestants from their teams, based on their team member's overall statistics during the Academic Team playing season.

The two selected state team coaches then arrange try-outs for the nominated students, and use the results of those try-outs to select the 6 students with the highest statistics for answering correctly in the required subject areas. Then, the state coaches prepare the new composite-team for their rigorous state competition.

This competition is usually held in April, at the Contemporary Hotel in Disney World. After semi-final and final rounds, 1st through 3 rd place teams are awarded individual scholarships up to $5000/per student (for 1st place).

Volusia County Schools generously sponsors the coaches and students competing in this incredible 4-day, all-expenses-paid, competition of the minds.
