We are STILL looking for NEW members.especially in the areas of Art/Humanities and Literature, but also those who are excellent in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, as well as excellent AND quick at solving high level math equations.

We have had TWO meetings so far: 9/13 and 9/18.

Our next meeting will be after school, Tuesday, October 16th, 7-106.

The Deland High School Academic Team has a more than 20-year history at Deland High School... a more than 20-year history of WINNING. Mrs. Blair, its founder, has also been the team coach during this time.

After  two-year winning streak, Mrs. Blair re-formed the Academic Team in 2004. Under Captain Matt Davis's leadership the Academic team soared to second place in the county and placed two members on the 6-member state team.

Interim practices will be Tuesdays, after school, from 2:50 - 3:50, beginning September 20th under the direction of Team Captain, Jeff Smith.

In the next school year, practices will resume when announced in September. The actual playing season begins January and extends through the middle of March.

Games begin at scheduled high school locations at 5 p.m. and end around 7:30 p.m. on the scheduled nights. (To see schedule click here) Games are scheduled with two other area high schools at a single location. 5 students of one team, play 5 students of another team while the 3rd team poses questions in the areas of history, humanities, language, literature, math, science, and computers. Buzzer systems are used to respond.

The Varsity Team is coached by Mrs. Blair, room 7-105 and the JV Team is coached by Mrs. Nehrig. Freshman MUST attend all home games and practices.

All members are eligible to earn letters, pins, and bars for years of service. Awards are given out at the end of the year banquet at Stetson University.
If you are an IB student, Academic Team counts for CAS points.

Selected Team Members are nominated by Volusia County Coaches to try out for the State Team. If you are selected, you attend an all-expenses paid 4-day Tournament at the Contemporary Hotel in Disney World; along with perks, like Park-hopper passes!
