Teacher of the Year
Ms. Melinda O'Neill
Melinda O’Neill has taught in Volusia Co. Schools since 1994, and is currently the choral music teacher at DeLand High School, a position she has held since 2006. Melinda inherited a ninety-member choir at DeLand High School and has built it into a 250 member program which is recognized as one of the premier programs in the State of Florida. The Deland High School chorus is comprised of 8 ensembles that compete at top levels for both the district and state. Under her artistic direction, the DeLand High Concert Choir members were the invited guests at the 2010 Florida Association of School Board State Conference.
Ms. O’Neill is a graduate of Stetson University (BME and MEL). She served as an Associate Conductor for the Stetson University Children’s Choir from 1999-2007. In 1994 she received a nomination for a Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award, and in 1997 she was nominated for the West Volusia Multicultural Educator of the Year. She was also given the honor of being McInnis Elementary’s Teacher of the Year for 1999.
Melinda has two musical and athletic sons. On the weekends you can find her on the beach, reading a good book and eating dark chocolate.
