Engineering Academy
ENGINEERING ACADEMY PROGRAM OF STUDY
About the Engineering Academy
The Engineering Academy began in 1998 and is offered to students who are interested in a career in engineering, manufacturing, technical, or design field. The Academy consists of the Applied Engineering Technology track integrated with Geometry, Chemistry, and Physics. Engineering Technology uses Amatrol industry-standard equipment and hands-on learning to connect various areas and levels of manufacturing: quality assurance (precision measurement tools and materials testing), design processes (AutoDesk AutoCAD and Inventor, and SolidWorks along with surveying and mapping), manufacturing processes (machine tools, CNC milling, 3D printing, and plastics injection and blow-molding), automated materials handling (5-axis robot arm on an assembly line), electrical systems (AC/DC electrical systems, electrical control, and computer control), and fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics). The Academy also emphasizes design projects in which students work on real-world problems as a team, and each student contributes his/her subject matter expertise for their team. Some examples of past projects include automated can crushers, hovercrafts, the invention process, green construction technologies, alternative energies, and space station designs. The program culminates with a semester-long internship during the last semester of students’ senior year. Local internship sites include Bowyer-Singleton, the City of DeLand, Covidien, DelTran, the Department of Transportation, and FloMet.
We also have a club specifically for our engineering students, Epsilon Alpha Chi. The purpose of this club is to support the Engineering Academy at DeLand High School, and provide fellowship among students and staff. Students will have opportunities to explore engineering concepts and applications beyond what is covered in the classroom, along with extended time to work on curriculum and projects, and perform service projects for our local community.
OVERVIEW:
DeLand High School invites you to consider the Engineering Academy. The Academy Program is offered to students in ninth through twelfth grades. All students in Volusia County are eligible to apply for entry into the Academy.
The Academy will emphasize math, science, computer, and communication skills while giving students experiences with problem solving, logical sequencing, presentation skills and organizational skills.
Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, have already taken or be ready to take Algebra I (with a "C" average), must also have clean discipline and attendance records.
